WntResearch (WNT.ST) is a public company listed at the AktieTorget and is a research based Biotech Company spun out of Lund University, Sweden, founded in 2007.
The focus and aim of WntResearch is to develop novel anti-metastatic therapies for the treatment of cancer patients meets a large unmet medical need.
The company has two projects Foxy-5 and Box-5. The lead project is Foxy-5 which is currently being tested in vivo models and is planned to enter and finalize phase 1 clinical trials in metastatic cancer in 2012. Foxy-5 was well tolerated in two toxicology studies, both in rat and dog, finished in summer 2011.
Cancer is a worldwide problem that affects millions of people. Epithelial cancers like breast and colorectal cancer contributes with approximately 20% of all cancer cases in USA and only in 2009, 290 000 new cases were found, which results in at least three times that figure of cancer cases worldwide, globally, 1 070 000 persons die of breast and colorectal cancer each year.
Professor Tommy Andersson and his research group have reported a correlation between low/no level of Wnt5a, in the epithelial cancers breast, colorectal and prostate, and high risk of metastasis induction leading to decreasing chances of surviving the cancer for these patients.
WntResearch has patent the formylated hexapeptide, Foxy-5, taken from the Wnt5a sequence, that mimics the ability of Wnt5a to impair migration of epithelial cancer cells and acting anti-metastatic in a breast cancer POC study in mice.
